Driving While Disabled?

I went to the Dept of Licensing yesterday to renew my license.

While there, I was told that because I had my cane, I would have to take an additional driving test. I believe my response was, “whaaaat…”

The woman then proceeded to say that they are required to make anyone who comes in with a cane or crutches take an additional test before renewing. She kept questioning me about why I use the cane, and whether I actually put any weight on it, and whether I use it all the time. It sounded like she didn’t want to make me take the test – I finally caught on to what she was looking for, and told her it depends on the day and yes I am capable of walking without it, and I use it mostly for balance. She was happy with that and waived the “special test.”

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Is this particular office just run by a jerk who’s making up his or her own rules? I can’t find a single thing online or on the DOL site that says anyone who’s gimpy must prove a different level of driving competency than anyone who’s not. And fundamentally I think that would be illegal anyway.

WTF? Anyone?
